Fans of SteamWorld Dig should be excited to learn of the next title in the franchise: SteamWorld Heist, which will come to Wii U and Nintendo 3DS around February or March of 2015.
Brjann Sigurgeirsson, CEO of Swedish developer Image & Form, explained to Nintendo Life how SteamWorld Heist will be a far departure from its predecessor. The games are so different that SteamWorld Heist is being marketed as a complete revamp for the series. It’s not a sequel, but instead a new venture into a new genre of gaming.
“Where Dig was a Metroidvania digging platform adventure, Heist is a turn-based combat game set in space featuring steam-driven robots. So they’re very, very far apart in terms of gameplay,” Sigurgeirsson said.
SteamWorld Heist follows a team of steam-powered robots that band together, board foreign spacecraft vessels, and raid them. The game features unique 2D side-scrolling action played as a turn-based strategy game. It will, however, include the rich storytelling and characters SteamWorld Dig was known for. No word yet if will feature the Wii U/3DS cross-buy promotion its predecessor did.
