The titular character from Yacht Club Games’ Shovel Knight will appear in Inti Creates’ upcoming Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night in some fashion, the companies announced.
It’s not clear what role Shovel Knight, the spade-wielding chevalier whose NES-inspired indie game released to rave reviews last year, will have in the new game.
The collaboration began when Bloodstained artist Yuji Natsume created artwork (seen above) of Shovel Knight in tribute to the game. The developers believed that the redesign “feels right at home in the demon castle” of Bloodstained.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night now has the most successful Kickstarter campaign of any video game. Former Castlevania director Koji Igarashi is teaming up with Inti Creates to develop the title as a spiritual successor to the Castlevania series.
With 28 hours left in the campaign, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has raised nearly $4.5 million. The campaign has already met a number of stretch goals, including goals for a Wii U release and a prequel mini-game for Nintendo 3DS.
Shovel Knight also appeared as a playable character in Nintendo eShop indie title Runbow. His PlayStation and Xbox releases have featured appearances from Kratos from God of War and the Battletoads, respectively.
A free Shovel Knight expansion, titled Plague of Shadows, will release on all platforms later this year.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is planned to release on Wii U, PlayStation, Xbox, Windows, Mac and Linux in 2017.
