The popular pixel-perfect Shovel Knight will make an appearance as a special guest in Playtonic Games’ upcoming 3D platformer Yooka-Laylee.
Earlier today, Playtonic released a new character trailer during a developer panel at EGX 2016, UK’s biggest annual gaming event. To much surprise, the trailer revealed Yacht Club Games’ Shovel Knight as one of the members of the game’s cast.
While Shovel Knight’s exact role in Yooka-Laylee still remains a mystery, we do know that he will support the storyline as an NPC character. In the trailer, below, the knight is seen conversing with Yooka and Laylee, the game’s two main characters.
“Greetings adventurers! I seem to have embarked on such a grand adventure that I’ve ended up in the wrong game.”
Interestingly, Yacht Club Games has already released a Shovel Knight amiibo for its respective game; perhaps scanning the figure in Yooka-Laylee will allow players to summon the 3D knight to the game’s new world.
In May 2015, Playtonic Games director Gavin Price hinted that his team has begun talks with Nintendo to produce Yooka and Laylee amiibo figures. “Something in that area is still very much in our plans and there is nothing that is impossible to overcome, so what we do with that we will reveal at the right time,” Price said.
At E3 2016, Yooka-Laylee was delayed from its initial October 2016 release window to early 2017. Price told fans he felt confident with making the decision to delay the game, assuring them that they’ll “be pleased with the results when Yooka-Laylee arrives early next year.”
Yooka-Laylee is being developed for Wii U, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows, Linux, and Mac.
