Karissa the Destroyer a Hoax, Paid for by GameStop

Karissa the Destroyer. She’s a 10-year-old girl, Super Smash Bros. prodigy and a viral celebrity. Oh, and she’s an actor.

Earlier today we told you how the preteen walked into a GameStop competition against seasoned Smash veterans to give her rivals a full-on whooping. It was brutal. We thought a legend had been found.

But the entire thing was a publicity stunt paid for by GameStop.

Earlier this month, GameStop posted a casting call on Casting Networks Los Angeles looking for actors to pull off the faked scene. You can see the listing below. Each actor was paid $350 for ten hours of participation in the “hidden camera event.”

It’s unclear how the stunt was staged. Karissa probably wasn’t in control of her character, with the footage either being prerecorded or her character controlled behind the scenes by a cohort. If you look at the 1:50 mark in the video below, you can see that Karissa scratches her face and looks away from the screen at moments when her Diddy Kong executes devastating attacks.

I think it’s safe to say that “Karissa the Destroyer” has been destroyed.
