Nintendo Switch amiibo Support Confirmed
Nintendo said its next home video game platform, officially named Nintendo Switch, will offer amiibo support for compatible game software.
This morning, Nintendo shared a short video that introduced Nintendo Switch, but it made no mention of the console supporting amiibo. However, the company has since confirmed that for consumers and investors.
“If a Nintendo Switch game supports amiibo then the Nintendo Switch home gaming system will as well,” a Nintendo representative told IGN.
It’s currently unclear how players will activate the NFC figures and cards for compatible games. On Wii U and New Nintendo 3DS for example, players tap figures or cards to each system’s NFC-compatible screen. An NFC Reader/Writer accessory is used for original Nintendo 3DS models.
To be clear, Nintendo Switch has two main components: the Nintendo Switch console and the Nintendo Switch dock. The console is the unit with the high-definition LCD display; it also lets players attach Joy-Con controllers to each side of it and undock it to play games on the go. The dock simply provides power and charging for the console and a TV output.
Nintendo Switch launch window titles, its price, release date, and specifications will be shared at a later date. The system is expected to launch worldwide in March 2017.
