Nintendo NX Officially Unveiled as Nintendo Switch

After nearly two years of anticipation, Nintendo has unveiled Nintendo Switch, its next-generation video game system set to launch in 2017.

The system lets gamers play the same title on the go, at any time, with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now “added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.” (A “Game Card” slot is present on the Nintendo Switch.)

At home, the Nintendo Switch is docked and connected to the TV. When undocked, the system transitions to portable mode, where titles can be enjoyed away from home. “The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display.”

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. “One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options.” Alternatively, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers.

In addition, multiple Nintendo Switch systems can be brought together for local multiplayer competition.

Today’s Nintendo Switch announcement is just a glimpse of what Nintendo plans to share in the future; fans can expect more details via Nintendo Direct broadcast in the near future. Yesterday, Nintendo said the preview trailer would “serve as Nintendo’s preliminary announcement of information regarding the platform.”

“Full game demonstrations, the list of launch window titles, as well as launch date, price, product configuration and related specifics, will be shown and announced prior to the March launch,” Nintendo said.

Late Nintendo president Satoru Iwata first announced Nintendo NX on March 17, 2015. At the time, it was described as “dedicated game system that uses a new membership program to encompass smart devices and dedicated video game systems such as Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.”
