Super Mario Run Sprinting to iOS in December 2016
Nintendo’s next mobile game, Super Mario Run, is sprinting to iOS devices in December 2016, the company announced today at an Apple event.
Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto took the stage earlier today to reveal the news, demonstrating a live gameplay session of the upcoming smart device game developed by Nintendo and DeNA. Super Mario Run will launch first on the Apple iOS App Store this December and at a later date for Android users.
“We have created Super Mario Run to be perfect for playing on your iPhone,” said Miyamoto. “Super Mario has evolved whenever he has encountered a new platform, and for the first time ever, players will be able to enjoy a full-fledged Super Mario game with just one hand, giving them the freedom to play while riding the subway or my favorite, eating a hamburger.”
While the new mobile game looks familiar to millions of fans, its gameplay is largely different from previous games that star the iconic plumber. In Super Mario Run, players control Mario as he’s automatically propelled through each of the game’s levels; precise touches with a single finger tip will determine how Mario jumps, rolls, and wall jumps in various stages before grabbing the flag at the end.
Three modes of play will be available at launch. One mode has Mario collecting coins as he heads to the goal while another has players competing against the acrobatic moves of other players who have already completed the same course. A third mode lets players create their very own Mushroom Kingdom based on their performance from the first two modes.
When Super Mario Run launches in December, players will be able to download and play a portion of the game for free. Various microtransactions will unlock additional content.
As a result of today’s announcement, Nintendo has delayed its upcoming mobile games based on Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem to March 2017. Furthermore, Nintendo said today that they will not be able to launch their fifth planned mobile game by March 2017, as previously promised.
