Pokémon GO Trainers discovered an Easter egg that lets their Buddy Pokémon Pikachu ride on their shoulder, but it’s no walk in the park.
The game’s latest update (Version 0.37.0 on Android and Version 1.7.0 on iOS) introduces a Buddy Pokémon feature. Simply, Trainers can choose one of their Pokémon to be their walking partner and, by reaching a certain distance, can earn Candy for their Buddy Pokémon.
The clever Trainers from Reddit’s own TheSilphRoad learned that walking at least 10 km (6.2 mi) with a Pikachu will let them shoulder the chubby Electric-type Mouse Pokémon. Normally, Buddy Pokémon are displayed on the ground near the Trainer’s feet while viewing the player details screen.
While Nintendo News cannot confirm if this Easter egg trick works for other Buddy Pokémon, one Reddit user said, “All the small Pokémon get tired after long walks. You have to carry them after 10 km.” If true, Weedle, Caterpie, Pidgey, and other similar sized Pokémon can also take a ride on Trainers’ shoulders.
Another known Easter egg that Pokémon GO players can use involves renaming their Eevee to various nicknames based on the original anime series. Doing so correctly can produce evolutions for Vaporeon, Flareon, or Jolteon.
The new Pokémon GO update still has not rolled out for all players, but it is expected to go fully live “soon,” according to Niantic Labs.
