Niantic Announces Buddy Pokémon Feature for Pokémon GO

A new Pokémon GO update will add a Buddy Pokémon feature that lets Trainers pick their favorite Pokémon to appear next to their avatar.

On Wednesday, Nintendo News reported that data miners unearthed “Buddy Pokémon” references in the current version of Pokémon GO. The game’s developer, Niantic Labs, today confirmed that information. And the new feature “is just around the corner.”

“The next addition to Pokémon GO will be Buddy Pokémon,” the developer noted in a website post. “You will be able to pick your favorite Pokémon from your collection to become your buddy, opening up unique in-game rewards and experiences. Buddy Pokémon will appear alongside your Trainer avatar on your profile screen, adding helpful bonuses such as awarding Candy for walking together.”

In addition, Trainers will be able to freely swap out buddies for other buddies at any time. The current Android version for the game is 0.35.0. The current iOS version for the game is 1.5.0. We’ll be sure to let you know when the new updates are released.

While your pals may not follow behind you, as seen in previous Pokémon games on Nintendo systems, are you excited? What Pokémon will you choose first?
