Update (December 4): A new video titled “Shovel Knight amiibo Trailer!” (below) published by Yacht Club Games reveals the figure’s release dates. The toy will first be available in Europe on December 11 and in North America on January 8.
Yacht Club Games has officially announced the Shovel Knight amiibo figure, which will unlock exclusive features for both versions of the game.
During the pre-PAX Prime event held in Seattle’s EMP Museum on Thursday evening, Shovel Knight developer Yacht Club Games took the stage to unearth the much-anticipated Shovel Knight amiibo figure. The toy will be the first officially licensed amiibo for a third-party game.
Shovel Knight, in his amiibo form, will hit retailers “soon” and will be sold “along with the other figures,” said Damon Baker, Nintendo of America’s senior marketing manager for publisher and developer relations.
While playing Shovel Knight, players can tap the amiibo on the Wii U GamePad to unlock a co-op mode; exclusive challenges will be unlocked for both versions of the game, however. “There will be more Yacht Club and Shovel Knight content coming to Nintendo platforms in the future,” Baker said.
The Shovel Knight amiibo will be compatible with all future titles from Yacht Club Games developed for Nintendo systems.
Rumors of the Shovel Knight amiibo first surfaced last Saturday when a Spanish retailer listed the product on their website. Adding to that, several retailers in the UK — yesterday — added product listings to their website, with pre-orders going live before Yacht Club Games even revealed their new toy.
