Pokémon Yungoos Was Not Inspired by Donald Trump

Alola Pokémon Yungoos and its evolution Gumshoos were not meant to look like presidential candidate Donald Trump, according to Game Freak.

When The Pokémon Company introduced Yungoos in Pokémon Sun & Moon at E3 2016, the Loitering Pokémon was immediately compared to Donald Trump. Specifically, Yungoos sported a hairdo strikingly similar to that of Trump’s, albeit perhaps a bit tidier. When Gumshoos was revealed, even more memes flooded the Internet.

Since then, people have wondered if the pair of new Pokémon were inspired by Trump. But Game Freak producer and composer Junichi Masuda recently put an end to the mystery behind the creation of the Trumpesque creatures.

“It’s a very American-centric question I think, and actually a lot of people sent me comparison photos on Twitter pointing out the resemblance,” Masuda told Game Informer in a recent interview. “But we had started the design of this Pokémon a long time back, and we didn’t have any intention to make it look like Donald Trump.”

That doesn’t mean some Pokémon designs haven’t been inspired by current events, however.

“We don’t really look at current events that are going on, but one thing we sometimes do when designing Pokémon is kind of see what kids of that era might like,” said Shigeru Ohmori, a director at Game Freak for Pokémon Sun & Moon. “For example, if there’s a popular animal as a pet in a certain era, then we might want to try and come up with a certain Pokémon based off of that, to kind of really just focus on what kids of this era might like.”

But enough about hairdos for Yungoos, Gumshoos, and Trump. The real question is, “which Game Freak employee was responsible for designing Alolan Dugtrio’s hairdo“?

Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon on Nintendo 3DS debut in North America and Japan on November 18. Both games arrive in Europe a few days later, on November 23.
