Pokémon Sun & Moon 3D Effects Limited to Poké Finder

Pokémon Sun & Moon 3D Effects Limited to Poké Finder

Stereoscopic 3D effects for Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon are limited to the games’ new picture-taking feature known as the Poké Finder.

Multiple media outlets who have previewed the upcoming pair of 3DS games have noted that Sun & Moon utilize less 3D than the series’ previous entries. That means players won’t be able to battle in Alola’s tropical 3D environments.

However, 3D effects are implemented when using Poké Finder, a feature built-in to the Rotom Dex, to snap pictures of captured Pokémon. Furthermore, Poké Finder is limited to “certain photo spots scattered throughout the Alola region,” according to The Pokémon Company.

Pokémon X & Y were the first main series Pokémon games to make use of the Nintendo 3DS hardware’s stereoscopic 3D functionality. Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire also take advantage of the visual effects; however, all four games use the technology only sparingly due to the hardware’s inability to maintain a smooth frame rate.

Many players have already criticized the games’ 3D effects feature, chalking it up as simply “a gimmick.” Others prefer having better graphics and less lag over 3D. This could likely be the reason why Game Freak has all but ditched 3D implementation in Sun & Moon.

What are your thoughts on having restricted 3D effects? Is it a gimmick or does it improve gameplay experience? Feel free to let us know your thoughts in the comments section below or on our social media channels.

    • Sonic Racing Transformed & Smash Bros. do 3D 60 FPS, so why not Pokémon? Even Pokémon Mystery Dungeon does 3D 60 FPS. Someone has to question Game Freak’s ability to make games for Game Boy Color and DS and 3DS. And why is Pokémon XY and ORAS and Sun & Moon in 60 FPS, it’s Pokémon, 30 FPS would be just fine. So give us 3D 30 FPS option implemented via an update for Pokémon XY and ORAS and Sun & Moon.
