A new Pikmin game is headed to Nintendo 3DS in 2017, and it will focus on side-scrolling action and adventure, Nintendo announced today.
While its official title has yet to be shared, “Pikmin for Nintendo 3DS” will once again task players with filling the role of a pint-sized explorer named Olimar. Of course, various colored Pikmin helpers — red, blue, and yellow — will lend support with their unique abilities.
“It’s just you, your colorful friends, and a perilous series of tasks you could only describe as an adventure,” said Bill Trinen, Senior Product Marketing Manager of Nintendo of America. “This Pikmin game is being designed with action in mind. It will make you think fast and utilize every Pikmin to overcome anything that stands in your way.”
It’s currently unclear who the responsible developer is behind the new Pikmin game. However, gameplay footage (below) looks reminiscent to that of skip Ltd. and Vanpool Games’ Chibi-Robo Zip Lash, a spin-off title released on Nintendo 3DS in October 2015.
According to Nintendo exec Shigeru Miyamoto, there’s also another Pikmin game in development. “Continually launching campaigns after the release of software will lay the groundwork for the next iteration of ‘Pikmin’ in the future,” Miyamoto said in 2014. “And needless to say, we want it to be one of the motivations for potential consumers to purchase Wii U. We are making a variety of different efforts.”
