A new 2017 Kia Sorento commercial features football rivals Bo Jackson and Brian Bosworth in retro Tecmo Bowl style, telling a classic story.
Many Nintendo fans will remember playing the original Tecmo Bowl on NES in the late ’80s and early ’90s. Many fans — both longtime and new — still play the pastime favorite today. Bo Jackson, unquestionably the game’s fastest running back who played for Los Angeles Raiders, has returned for another touchdown nearly 30 years later.
At the age of 53, Jackson’s tired and way past his prime; he can no longer stop on a dime like he used to and he certainly cannot blaze the 40-yard dash in 4.12 seconds. However, “Bo Knows” breaks — Autonomous Emergency Braking, to be exact.
But there’s a history lesson to learn (or relive) from the new Kia Sorento commercial. It’s not about Jackson and Bosworth on a Sunday drive in a new car. The two are former and fierce gridiron rivals.
Here’s what we know about the relationship on the field between the star Raiders back and the then-Seattle Seahawks linebacker, according to Wikipedia:
“Perhaps [Jackson’s] most notable performance in his rookie season came on Monday Night Football against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 11. Prior to the game Seahawks linebacker Brian Bosworth insulted Jackson and promised in a media event before the game to contain Jackson. Jackson responded by running over Bosworth on his way to a touchdown near the goal line.”
Knowing that, the video below should be much more enjoyable. And Kia Motors nailed it.
Speaking of Tecmo Bowl, it’s worth reminding readers that the miniature NES Classic Edition will include the popular sports game as one of its 30 pre-installed classics when it arrives in stores this November.
