Edit: Trainers continue to report that the below method is successful, but some are saying that their second Eevee isn’t evolving correctly. It’s possible Trainers may only be able to obtain one specific evolution at a time — not the same one twice in a row.
It’s true: Pokémon GO players can evolve Eevee into Vaporeon, Flareon, or Jolteon by using their nicknames from the original anime series.
It seems Niantic Labs’ has buried an Easter egg based on The Battling Eevee Brothers, the 40th episode of the Pokémon anime series released in Japan and North America in 1998.
The nickname trick was recently discovered by a Reddit user. And, numerous reports from Trainers confirm that renaming Eevee with one of three nicknames prior to evolution gets the job done.
“The Eevee Brothers from the original anime were named Rainer, Pyro, and Sparky, and they owned a Vaporeon, Flareon and Jolteon, respectively,” Reddit user smithnigel noted. “If you nickname your Eevee either ‘Rainer,’ ‘Pyro’ or ‘Sparky,’ your Eevee will evolve into that desired Eeveelution!”
Nintendo News reader Anthony C. sent in the following image earlier today. It’s worth noting that nicknames need to be exactly as shown above; some Trainers have reported the trick not working, but it’s because they used all caps.
Current Eevee Evolutions – Pokémon GO
It will be interesting to see if Niantic implements more Eeveelution methods in the future. A good example would be for Trainers to evolve Eevee at night time for an Umbreon.
