Ash-Greninja Knows Battle Bond, a Brand-New Ability

Ash-Greninja will join the Pokémon Sun & Moon Special Demo Version later this month, but his new Ability, Battle Bond, is worth another look.

The Pokémon Company may have revealed Starter evolutions Dartrix, Torracat, Brionne earlier today, but Ash-Greninja deserves his own time in the spotlight. Under certain circumstances, the Water/Dark-type Ninja Pokémon can temporarily use Battle Bond to unleash devastating attacks on his opponent.

“The Battle Bond Ability triggers this Pokémon’s form change to Ash-Greninja after it causes an opponent’s Pokémon to faint,” reads a detailed description on the official Pokémon website. “When the battle ends, the Pokémon returns to its original Greninja form. This form is only for battles where it needs to break the limits!”

What’s interesting is that Battle Bond may not be exclusive only to Ash-Greninja. Another portion of Ash-Greninja’s description reads, “Greninja that can become Ash-Greninja have an Ability that no Pokémon has ever had before.” This could suggest that other Pokémon are capable of developing deep enough bonds with their Trainer to use Battle Bond.

Players can receive Ash’s Greninja after completing the Pokémon Sun & Moon Special Demo, scheduled to launch on Nintendo eShop on October 18. They can then transfer the Pokémon to the full version of Pokémon Sun or Moon.

Do you think other Pokémon can learn the Ability Battle Bond? If so, which ones? Feel free to let us know in the comments section below or on our social media channels. We would love to hear your thoughts.

  1. I agree. There are many possibilities that Battle Bond can lead in. What I would like to see in Alola is Greninja returning, and Battle Bond being explored with several other Pokemon, including Serena’s Braxien.

I also want to show how this Ability affect both Trainer and Pokemon. What I suggest as this Ability evolves, both Trainers and Pokemon increasingly begin to share certain traits and habits relating to their personality, with the line between human and Pokemon becoming blurred.

  2. I agree. They should have developed multiple battle bond Greninjas based on the customization of the trainer in the game.

  3. Think I’m mostly opposed to it looking like Ash, when ‘battle bond’ and the forme change suggest the appearance of that form is based on the trainer.
